Hendrix Lino print

This is in effect a monoprint of Hendrix as each print is unique as I have added multi colours to a single sheet of Lino which has then been printed over a base of yellow gold

I was trying to attempt a more painted process- the two linocuts are visable in the header the back one being the main black or multi colour plate and the front one being the yellow base colour

Hendrix was an inspired guitarist. He pioneered using amplifiers creating unique distorted sound with feedback pushing the guitar and the sounds in totally new directions. His records still sound amazing today. He led the way inspiring a whole new world of guitar playing.

Not been to Saltaire – you are missing a real treat

Saltaire Village is near Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. It is named after Sir Titus Salt who built a textile mill, known as Salts Mill and this village on the River Aire. Designed by architects, Lockwood and Mawson, Salts Mill was opened on Sir Titus Salt’s 50th birthday, 20 September 1853. In December 2001, Saltaire was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Beatles – Sgt Pepper

This is my tribute the the fab 4 as Sgt Pepper and the release on the 26 May 1967 of their commercial and critical successful album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,  On release, the album was lauded by the vast majority of critics for its innovations in music production, songwriting and graphic design,

This series of 4 portraits is based on the album

Each member of the Beatles in mock military outfits:

John in Yellow

Paul in Blue

George  in Orange

and Ringo in pink

The iconic album cover conceived and created by Peter Blake the english Pop Artist, set the beatles with their mustaches and shiny mock band uniforms, alongside their suited, mop-topped wax statues and surrounded by cardboard cutouts of cultural figures like Fred Astaire, Edgar Allen Poe, W. C. Fields, Dylan, Marlene Dietrich and  Shirley Temple. The music was a blend of modern music and musichall sounds.

Rufus

I wanted to do something for Red Nose Day this year and as the theme this years was dogs and cats – I cut this nice image of a dog a whippet I think ?

While I print all but my Cards in a limited editions – this one is 1 of 30, I like to re use the images as much as possible. so I didn’t want to cut Rufus with out a nose. I think the solution works well, the black is a full image and the Red Nose was applied as a full circle of red over the black nose. I did leave it a bit late so cut and printed them over a couple of days and sold them to friends and business colleagues, I would like to thank my BNI group the High Flyers for the generosity.

I sold 12 of the Rufus print and a few other prints and cards and all the money raised £185.00 was sent off on the night to a very worthwhile cause.

Thank you, those people who bought a print

Keith Richards

Keith Richards makes a great subject for a lino print, all those lines on his face.

The image is 200mm high and 150mm wide, I start with a photo import this into photoshop and play around with the colour, brightness, contrast and polarize the final selection.

I trace over this image and then using the trace as a starting point draw over the trace – depending on the lino the trace is hardly there.
I dont like to define much more than these guide lines and then start cutting, I tried out using a red wash over the pen work for the first time and think in future I will adopt this technique as it is easier to see what you have cut.

Leonard

leonard1

As a life long fan of Leonard Cohen, I wanted to remember him
in some way and where looking around for inspiration I came
across the stunning linocuts of forgotten people by Neil Shrigley,
and this on a small scale was my first attempt at something similar.

This was my first linocut portrait, and I am still working out the
technique, but when I showed it to a few friends they all wanted
a copy – so I am happy.

I drew the image directly from my iPad and cutting it listening to Leonard.

I am printing a limited edition in blue called ‘Blue Leonard’ and
this will be shortly available on Etsy – The limited edition black
ones have gone.

leonard2

The process got me thinking – I should do a number of other
portraits the same size, based on my heroes – the next one in
production is Woody Allen – call back to see the others join
them over the next few weeks.

i have just ordered some larger sections of lino and will also
work on some bigger, more detailed versions.

Chameleon

I have started but not finished two connected prints, my first Linocut ‘Tree
Frog’ and a second one called ‘Chameleon’.

They are both cut – the Chameleon needs a bit of refinement on the fine
line work – both have been proofed and waiting for a final print run.

I get so excited with the desire to cut the lino but I am less keen on the
printing. Inking and printing is quite slow and laborious and I do get bored
and impatient with the drying time. I don’t know id this is the ink or the
paper I am using – I think it’s more likely the paper is not absorbent
enough.

I am looking to get hold of some Japanese paper to try.

Boba Fett

Boba Fett is an iconic image from Star Wars and this is my Lino cut and Print

The image is 200mm high and 150mm wide, on Japanese Masa 89g paper in 3 colours, paper is 265mm x 198mm
This was my first attempt at a 3 colour print, I wasn’t brave enough to do a reduction cut, I am working on a poppy print and plan to try out the reduction process on this. A 3 colour print means 3 Linocuts one for each colour, and registration – this is a big deal, printing the first colour in this case the yellow, waiting for them to dry, printing the second colour the turquoise blue colour, waiting for this to dry and then printing the final Brown colour.
I lost a few prints at each stage, and realised that registration is a lot harder than I thought it would be.
Next time I need to plan more, be more accurate with my registration and cut away more of the areas that I don’t want to print. But its all a learning curve.
Out of the first batch of printing a think I managed to get 8 that I would be happy to sell and 7 that I have scrapped

Woody Allen

Based on the success of the Leonard Linocut, I thought I would come up with a
set of 4 heroes – I have been a life long fan of Woody Allen from his early
comedies – ‘Play it again Sam’ being one of the first Allen films I saw.
I usually start with an image from the web and then using Photoshop I adjust
the image and posterize it – it helps identify the areas to keep and cut.
